PT Perspective on Women’s Health: Karen Weeks

Physical therapist Karen Weeks of Florendo Physical Therapy knows the pelvis, and the vital role it plays in overall functional movement of our bodies. She specializes in the evaluation and treatment of women’s and men’s pelvic and spinal dysfunction, lymphedema, pelvic and breast cancer rehabilitation, incontinence, pelvic pain and pregnancy and postpartum related issues.

So naturally, the 2015 Share MayFlowers for pelvic health awareness campaign had to ask her a few questions.

SMF: Are there any pelvic health-related articles you’d recommend to the Share MayFlowers community?

KW: I love this simple, true (and hilarious!) blog post on proper vulvar hygiene!

SMF: In your career/life experience, name one really influential maternal/pelvic health inspiration.

KW: Elizabeth Noble, Physical Therapist, brought her wealth of knowledge in Obstetrical PT practice from Australia to the US in the 1980s…we can only hope to continue her dream of incorporating safer, easier, healthier approaches into the delivery rooms in every corner of the world!

SMF: Why does pelvic health and Share MayFlowers matter to you?

KW: Knowledge is Power. A woman simply cannot know enough about her body, how it changes over her life-span, how to properly take care of her body (and mind!)…it is the hope that as we promote amazing platforms, like ShareMayFlowers, that we reach one more woman and arm her with knowledge!

SMF: What is one thing you wish when it comes to female pelvic and/or maternal health?

KW: I wish everyone had access to a Pelvic Physical Therapist.

SMF: Amen to that! In your field of pelvic and/or maternal health, what would be a dream come true in the coming years?

KW: My dream would be that we start educating young girls with honest, positive and effective information about their bodies, hoping that starting early will prevent problems later in life.
